Don’t Forget the Padding

Filed under: Uncategorized — cmofc @ 12:47 pm

Even though you can’t see the carpet cushion it is just as important to consider as the carpet itself. Did you know that it’s carpet cushion, not the carpet itself that determines how a carpet feels beneath your feet?

Carpet cushion:

Helps preserve the look of the carpet
Can extend the life of the carpet
Provides protection against wear
Absorbs the impact of foot traffic
Can improve the sound absorption in a room
Actually helps keep your carpet cleaner and easier to maintain
Things to consider when purchasing carpet cushion:

Thicker is not always better
Look for cushion that is not too soft nor too hard – this is purely personal preference
If different rooms have different needs, different cushion can be used in different areas
Put your money in the cushion, better cushion allows you to buy a less expensive carpet
Make sure that if you are purchasing prime urethane cushion that it is FHA approved
When selecting carpet cushion, place the sample under a carpet sample and walk on it. Take your shoes off and feel the difference. You will be surprised at how great the right cushion can make a piece of carpet feel.

Stainmaster Carpet and the many imposters.

Filed under: Carpet — Tags: — cmofc @ 3:35 pm

Stainmaster Carpet, in fact carpet in general, seems to be one of the most misunderstood major purchases a consumer makes. Consider how hard people shop for cars, televisions,  appliances etc..

Carpet many times is purchased by how thick or soft it is with no real consideration for what makes a carpet durable. To understand carpet you must realize that there are two separate companies who have a stake in the production of the carpet. The manufacturer of the yarn and the company that makes the yarn into the carpet. The yarn manufacturer can be either make yarn from Nylon, polyester, wool or polypropylene. The best product for carpet has always been nylon, Specifically Stainmaster Nylon, but due to recent economic times so many manufactures are reduced to making polyester product due to the low cost per ounce and the relative softness of the yarn for the cost. Triextra the new Dupont polymer recently received permission to classify this polyester as a subclass of the Polyester family. The carpets resilience is routed in the yarn that it is made out of. Nylon has a long history for the durability and historic performance to outlast all other man made fibers on the market.

Stainmaster the best known brand of Nylon fiber has a wear story unlike that of any other product in the market. All major mills manufacture carpets made from the most durable fiber available. Mohawk, Shaw, Beaulieu, Milliken, Royalty, Gulistan and on and on. Many of the same mills run the polyester products with almost duplicate colors and finishes. Buyer beware, Carpet outlets can choose to show you either but only one will hold up like most families would expect. Home centers are always quoting low prices but when one looks closer you start to realize that these prices are on very inexpensive Polyester products that have a lifespans of half what a similarly constructed Stainmaster Nylon carpet would provide.

The twist and construction of the carpet can be equally as important to the long term durability of the carpet you choose. Did you know that two carpets of equal weight constructed differently can have effective lifespans that vary as much as 50%. Loose construction or products with little twist will not hold their shape, these products will then tend to pack down and crush. once this begins to happen it is only a short time later that this carpet becomes unrecognizable as the product that was purchased and you are forced to purchase again.

Many people who have bought homes in the last few years have realized this to all be true. To lower costs most builders chose to move to very inexpensive products that to the naked eye look just like what they had always used on the floors, but were made out of inexpensive polyester fibers and months later, that right months not years, they were looking at a product that appeared to look 5 or even 10 years older that it actually was. Customers quickly claimed these problems with the home builders and were turned away due to the warranty’s being written the way the were. Polyester looks great on the sample but it does not hold up like Nylon. Do not be fooled! Sadly many of these customers could have found Nylon alternatives to the products they chose for comparable prices had they looked in the right places. Stainmaster Flooring Centers have a wide variety of the full gambit of products available and at every price point.

Take some time to speak to an expert and let us show you, not tell you, why Stainmaster has become the gold standard for carpeting. Go to the Stainmaster web site for proof of the durability advantage Stainmaster and nylon has over all other flooring fibers.

“I Know What I’m Doing!”

Filed under: Uncategorized — cmofc @ 11:28 am

The last time you went on a mission to buy a high ticket item, or even a moderately priced item, the moment you got the “I know what I’m doing,” your absolute next action was to DO IT; pull out the credit card and makes the purchase, or sign on the dotted line.

When you walk through the door of our stores, the POP materials, fixtures, floor layout, cleanliness, bright paint colors, organized flooring samples – and many other elements that make our store unique, reinforce you’re in the right place and you’ve made the right decision.

Three things on every customers mind:
1. “I want to go to the best store in the market place.”
2. “I want to meet an intelligent sales professional who knows his or her product.”
3. I want my shopping experience to be fun and easy. I should feel good about buying from this store and this salesperson.”

Carpet Mill Flooring Stores and Carpet Mill Stainmaster Flooring Centers have all the tools that will support the feeling, “I know what I’m doing.”

Tool #1 Style Selection Kiosk
Each Stainmaster® Flooring Center showroom, Stainmaster® carpet samples are displayed in three performance categories: Stainmaster®, ActiveLife® and Ultralife®. This is a Good/Better/Best categorization is based on features, benefits, and performance ~ not price. Stainmaster® UltraLife carpet has the best performance of all carpet brands. It’s warranty covers common household food and beverage stains but also covers accidental and other non-covered stains for fifteen years – twenty years if purchased with Stainmaster® carpet cushion.

There are 6 styles of carpet.

Texture: Curled or twisted tufts make a textured surface that helps mask footprints. This typs of carpet is suitable for less formal and relatively high-traffic areas.
Frieze: A type of textured carpet with highly twisted tufts that curl as the pile surface of fiber bundle ends. It is suitable for high-traffic areas and creates a casual to sophisticated look.

Saxony: A dense level cut pile. Yarn tufts are closely packed presenting a smooth and luxurious surface. Saxony makes a room/home look formal and elegant.
California Cable: A combination of heavy cable and cut pile fibers, highly twisted to give it exceptional durability. This type of carpet creates a sophisticated but casual look.
Loop Carpet: (Many times incorrectly called, Berber). Loop pile with tufts of equal height or multi level loops. Multi-level loops form beautiful patterns using solid colors. This type of carpet has broad application. Because of the loop construction it offers very high performance.
Pattern Cut Pile or Precision Cut: Sophisticated Cut: Sophisticated look is achieved by using Saxony yarns, but generating a pattern by tufting cut pile and loop pile with a level pile height. These styles make a room/home look formal or informal (based on style), but sophisticated and elegant.

Tool #2 Color Lab.
The color lab is a great tool that will help you feel good about your selection and confident they will look as good in your room as they do in the showroom. The color lab will take a “nice” carpet and turn it into a “wonderful” and “gorgeous” carpet with the touch of a button.

Tool #3 Cushion Tester
We’ll take your chosen carpet sample, place it on top of the carpet cushion and let you feel the difference of each cushion sample. We’ll explain, weight, thickness and durability and help you decide which is the best selection for your carpet purchase.

Tips for selecting the right Carpet for your home

Carpet- nothing looks like it, feels like it or performs like it. It enhances the peace and quiet of your home by absorbing sound. It insulates against cold, cushions for comfort, adds safety against slips and falls, and protects against damage to objects being dropped. As a key decorative element in your home, no other product gives the enormous differentiation between styles and colors like Carpet. A question that gets asked repeatedly of me while working with clients is what is the best Carpet? This is a much more complicated question than it first looks so for the purpose of this Blog I will try and help with some educational basics.

Carpet as we know it today has three key elements. The yarn used in the carpet, the construction or twist of the product, and the weight of the carpet. Stain treatment is very important as well but is a separate topic that will be discussed later. For something we use everyday Carpet is very misunderstood. Carpet durability is not a function of how heavy it is. I know this is surprising to many but I use an example of some of the most durable carpets made today for commercial use in banks and lobbies often weigh 20-26 ounces. The products are constructed in a way to allow maximum performance.

I will continue o this subject soon.

Comparing Flooring Products

Wow! I have spent hours discussing the same topic with so many people I thought it might be time to talk about it here. The same thing keeps coming up when comparing products. “I have seen the same product elsewhere for less.” The obvious questions from me come up. “Do you know the name of the product?” “What type of yarn was it made with?” I receive the same response to these questions so often I am shocked at how uneducated people are when looking for such an expensive addition to their home.

The problem today is everyone is so convinced that something cheap will be just as good as something expensive. The old saying”You get what you pay for” could not be more true than with carpet. Every carpet looks deceivingly similar. The problem is products made with different yarns perform very differently. Many retailers today are showing Polyester carpets for the first time. These carpets look very nice and are very soft. The problem is that they soil terribly and have a far inferior resiliency. When the average consumer only purchases floor coverings once every 8-10 years you can see how important it would be to select the right products or have a very expensive replacement in the next few years. I do not blame this on Consumers as they are truly more educated in many ways than ever with the Internet aiding them. The problem exists in the Retail chain.

More customers today find themselves alone when looking at products in big stores with no help, and the help that you search out ends up coming from someone from plumbing. Low prices look good but if the smart consumer would look just a little further you would find the truth. All companies carry many of the same items and these are all priced very similarly. I for example carry products that are the same or lower price than My Big Box competitors.

My customer thinks that I do not coming in the door but is quickly educated to understand the truth. What I find myself doing is adding the better quality products to the conversation that Most competitors are too scared to sell because the customer might think their price is too high. If price is everything why do we not all drive Mopeds or (name your lowest priced car). It just so happens that all things are not the same and carpet is no different.

It is very difficult to earn what it takes to do floor coverings, be smart about what product those hard earned dollars goes into. Do not purchase until you have had an expert discuss you family’s needs and the available products features and benefits. If you are doing floors to sell your house then Polyester may make perfect sense. If you plan on occupying you home for any length of time you must focus on the Nylon if you want durability.

Revamping your Colorado Wood Floors

Its that time of year again when we all fire up the furnace and dry out our already arid home to single digit humidity. This in turn shrinks our wood floors allowing gaps the width of quarters (or worse) to show up seemingly overnight.

For those of us who have had wood for years in Colorado this is no great surprise, but imagine having just moved to the state and installing thousands of dollars of wood floors in your new home. Just to awake one morning with gaps in your new floor.

Concerned people should contact our stores so we can give them the expectations of wood in an arid climate. This could prove to be key for the happiness of the consumer, ours and others. The good news is there is a happy ending. Come spring the floors expand back to the same as they were the day they were installed. For more information Check out Carpetmilloutletstores.com
